The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a “pardon our dust” meeting Wednesday night, Feb. 19 in Barker Hall at Irving Middle School, 8100 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield, VA 22152 on the construction underway to widen about a mile and a half of Rolling Road (Route 638) from two lanes to four with a raised median, shared-use path and sidewalk between Viola Street and Kenwood Avenue.
This stretch of Rolling Road averages about 21,000 vehicles a day.
A presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the construction team will answer questions after the presentation.
The widening project, which aims to improve safety, traffic flow and bicyclist/pedestrian mobility and accessibility, also includes:
* Constructing a new traffic signal at Rolling Road and Greeley Boulevard.
* Upgrading the traffic signal at Rolling Road and Barnack Drive.
* Making access management and stormwater improvements.
During construction:
* Daytime lane closures outside of peak travel hours on weekdays will be scheduled along Rolling Road.
* Pedestrians may encounter closures on the existing sidewalks and paths along Rolling Road and are asked to follow detour signs as necessary.
This is the second phase of the $83 million Rolling Road widening project, which is financed with federal, state (including Revenue Sharing), Northern Virginia Transportation Authority and local funding. The first phase of the project featured improvements to the Rolling Road and Old Keene Mill Road (Route 644) intersection and was completed in 2021.
Phase 2 is scheduled for completion in late 2027.
Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution when traveling in active work zones. Be alert to new traffic patterns and limit distractions.
